Training a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: what works and what to expect

Wheatens are clever and keen, with a terrier streak of independence. Short, lively, reward-based sessions keep them engaged, and they get bored quickly with repetition, so change exercises often and make training feel like play.

The top challenge is jumping up. Teach an alternative from the first week: sit to be greeted, or four paws on the floor earns attention, and ask visitors to ignore any leaping. Recall and 'leave it' need extra work because of the chase instinct. Wheatens also dislike long stretches alone, so build up solo time gradually, starting from a few minutes.
