Smooth Fox Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Smooth Fox Terrier.

An adult of around 8 kg (18 lb) usually eats 100 to 140 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 1 to 1.5 cups, divided into two meals. Busy dogs burn more, but a Smooth that spends its days on the sofa can put on weight quickly. Its lean, square outline makes extra padding easy to spot, so if the waist disappears, cut portions by around 10%.

Terriers are opportunists, so keep bins secured and food out of reach. A puzzle feeder or scatter feeding in the garden gives a Fox Terrier something to hunt for at mealtimes, which uses energy and satisfies the urge to search. Choose a sturdy, heavy bowl, since some will happily flip an empty plastic dish or carry it round the house.
