Norfolk Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Norfolk Terrier.

A 5.5 kg adult with moderate activity typically needs about 350 to 420 kcal a day, roughly 90 to 110 g of a typical dry food (about 1 cup). Norfolks are enthusiastic eaters and gain weight easily, and the dense wiry coat can hide an extra kilo for months. On a dog this size, one kilo is close to a fifth of its body weight.

Measure meals, count every treat and check body condition every two weeks by running your hands along the ribs and looking for a waist from above. Two meals a day suits most adults. Use part of the daily ration for training and scent games so the dog earns food rather than simply receiving it.

A low, heavy bowl suits their short stature and stays put when an eager eater pushes it across the floor.
