Standard Poodle grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Standard Poodle: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Because the curls catch loose hair rather than letting it fall, you will vacuum less than with most breeds, but the trapped hair turns into mats if nobody removes it. Brush right down to the skin three or four times a week with a slicker brush, then run a metal comb through to check your work. Line brushing, where you hold the coat up with one hand and brush a thin layer beneath, reaches the hidden tangles behind the ears, under the legs and along the collar line.
Most owners book a professional groom every 4 to 6 weeks, and a short, even pet clip (often called a sporting or lamb clip) is far easier to maintain between visits than a long coat. Hair grows inside the ear canal, and a warm, damp ear after swimming is an invitation for trouble, so dry ears after water and ask your groomer or vet whether yours need the canal hair managed. Trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks, and introduce puppies to clippers and dryers early so salon visits stay calm.
