Treeing Walker Coonhound health: what owners should know

Coonhounds are hardy dogs on the whole, and the Treeing Walker is no exception. Known issues include hip dysplasia, ear infections and coonhound paralysis, a nerve condition that in some cases follows contact with raccoon saliva. Injuries from running through woodland, such as torn nails and cut pads, are common in working dogs.

Look for parents with hip scores and a sound working history. Check ears weekly and after every outing. See a vet promptly for weakness in the back legs that spreads or worsens, a change in bark or breathing, lameness that lasts more than a couple of days, or head shaking with a smell from the ears.
