Akita puppy growth: milestones and weight estimates
How fast an Akita puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.
Akita puppies go from about 5 to 7 kg (11 to 15 lb) at eight weeks to more than 30 kg (66 lb) by six months. Height is mostly reached by 12 to 15 months, but the chest, head and mental maturity take until 2 or 3 years. Adolescence, roughly 7 to 18 months, is when many owners notice the first hints of dog intolerance or guarding.
Feed a large-breed puppy food and keep your pup slim to protect developing joints. Avoid forced running, lots of stairs or jumping from heights while the growth plates are open. Use this period to handle paws, ears and mouth every day, because an adult Akita that dislikes handling is very hard to examine or groom.
