Training an Afghan Hound: what works and what to expect

Afghans are intelligent but independent, bred to hunt at a distance and make decisions on their own. They often understand what you want and choose whether it is worth doing. Short sessions, high-value rewards and patience work best, while repetitive drills and harsh corrections tend to backfire.

Recall and lead manners are the main challenges. Practice recall in enclosed spaces with the best treats you have, and accept that the dog may never be safe off lead in open country. Early socialization helps reduce aloofness with strangers. Grooming and handling practice from puppyhood, such as lying still on a table and having feet handled, makes lifelong coat care much easier.
