Training a Large Munsterlander: what works and what to expect

Large Munsterlanders are keen, soft and intelligent, and they respond well to calm, reward-based training. Their independence, however, is real: they were bred to hunt at a distance and make decisions without constant direction. Recall, especially when birds are about, needs consistent practice from puppyhood, ideally with a whistle and very tasty rewards.

Steadiness is the other key lesson, meaning your dog stays put when a bird rises or a dummy is thrown. Formal gundog training classes are an excellent outlet even for families that never hunt. Puppies are often mouthy, so give them things to carry; this breed loves having something in its mouth. Harsh handling damages trust quickly.
