Training a Rough Collie: what works and what to expect

How the Rough Collie learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Rough Collies learn quickly, remember well and respond beautifully to calm, reward-based handling. They are also sensitive. A raised voice or a physical correction can leave a collie anxious and hesitant for days, so frame lessons as a shared game and end each one on a success.

Barking is the main training project. Teach a 'thank you, that's enough' routine: acknowledge the first bark, then reward the quiet that follows. Also practice calm greetings and leaving moving things alone, since some collies nip at heels or chase bicycles out of herding instinct. Food and praise motivate most collies more than tug toys do.
