Eyes are the Cocker's best-known weak point. Cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and glaucoma all occur in the breed, alongside ear infections linked to those heavy ears. Hip dysplasia, kneecap problems and some skin and immune-related conditions are also reported. Good breeders use the DNA test for the common form of retinal atrophy and have eyes examined by a veterinary eye specialist before breeding.
Weekly ear checks and a slim waistline are the best everyday habits. See a vet promptly if an ear smells, or your dog shakes its head or scratches an ear repeatedly. An eye that looks cloudy, red, painful or suddenly bulging needs a same-day appointment, because pressure problems inside the eye can move quickly.
