Training an American Cocker Spaniel: what works and what to expect

Cockers are eager and food motivated, so short, reward-based sessions work well. They pick up basic cues quickly and love learning tricks, which is a good way to keep a clever dog busy on rainy days.

House-training can take a little longer than with some breeds, so a consistent schedule of trips outside helps. Guarding of toys or food shows up in some individuals; teaching trade games early (a treat in exchange for the sock) and never snatching items reduces it. Grooming practice is training too: reward calm behavior on the table in short steps, a few seconds at a time.
