The breed is generally healthy but is known to be predisposed to progressive retinal atrophy (the prcd form), hereditary cataracts, hip dysplasia and glycogen storage disease type II, also known as Pompe disease, an inherited metabolic disorder. Responsible breeders hip score their dogs, arrange regular eye examinations and DNA test for prcd-PRA and Pompe disease before mating.

Keeping your dog lean, protecting it from summer heat and brushing regularly are the most useful daily habits. Consult a vet if you notice clumsiness in dim light or bumping into furniture, cloudy eyes, stiffness when rising, or weakness and heavy panting after only light exercise. Signs of heatstroke, such as collapse or bright red gums, require an emergency visit.
