American Cocker Spaniel feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the American Cocker Spaniel.

An adult Cocker of around 12 kg (26 lb) typically eats 150 to 200 g of a typical dry food a day, about 1.5 to 2 cups, split into two meals. Cockers are enthusiastic eaters and gain weight easily, especially after neutering, so measure every meal and count training treats as part of the daily total.

Those long ears are the practical issue at mealtimes. They flop into food and water, get sticky and hold moisture close to the ear canal. A narrow, deep bowl with steep sides, often called a spaniel bowl, lets the ear leather fall outside the rim. Some owners hold the ears back with a soft fabric snood during meals, and a quick wipe of the ear tips afterwards stops old food drying into the hair.

Bowl height plays a part too. When a Cocker has to crouch low over a dish, the ears hang straight into it, whereas a bowl raised to a comfortable height for your dog's build lets the ears drape to the sides.
