Flat-Coated Retriever feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Flat-Coated Retriever.
An active adult Flatcoat of around 30 kg (66 lb) typically needs 300 to 400 g of dry food daily, about 3 to 4 cups, split into two meals. Working dogs in winter may need more, and quieter pets less. Flatcoats are lean athletes by design, and a visible waist is normal.
Food motivation is strong and counter surfing is a breed specialty. Store food securely, keep bins closed, and do not leave plates on low tables. Using part of the daily ration as training rewards keeps treats from pushing up calories.
Because they are deep-chested, feed calmly and avoid hard exercise for about an hour around meals. A slow feeder or snuffle mat can help fast eaters. A heavy water bowl is useful too, since some Flatcoats love nothing more than paddling in their water and tipping it over.
