Anatolians are efficient eaters for their size, a trait often linked to generations of working on sparse rations. Many adults do well on about 500 to 750 g of dry food a day, roughly 5 to 7.5 cups, depending on the dog's size, the season and how much patrolling it does. Working dogs on large farms may need more through the winter.
Feed two measured meals rather than leaving food out, and keep the dog lean enough that you can feel the ribs easily. Like other deep-chested giant breeds, the Anatolian is considered at risk of bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus). Sensible habits include avoiding strenuous activity for about an hour around meals, slowing down fast eaters and discussing bowl height with your vet, since studies on raised feeders have not given a clear answer.
Some Anatolians guard food or bowls, particularly from other dogs. Feed separately in multi-dog homes and keep children away during meals. A swollen belly, retching that brings nothing up, or sudden restlessness after eating needs an emergency vet straight away.
