Training an Australian Terrier: what works and what to expect
How the Australian Terrier learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Aussies are quick learners and more eager to please than many terriers, but they still have independent streaks. Short sessions with food rewards and games work best. They enjoy learning tricks and often do well in rally, obedience and earthdog trials, where their terrier drive becomes an asset.
Barking is the most common challenge. Teach a quiet cue early, reward calm behavior at windows and doors, and avoid rewarding noisy demands for attention. Recall needs practice, especially around wildlife. Early socialization with other dogs helps, since some Aussies can be assertive with dogs of the same sex.
