Australian Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Australian Terrier.
A 6 to 7 kg (13 to 15 lb) adult typically eats around 80 to 120 g of dry food a day, roughly 1 to 1.25 cups, split into two meals. Active dogs need a little more, less active ones a little less. Aussies are enthusiastic eaters and can become chunky if treats are handed out freely, so keep a close eye on the waistline and weigh your dog every month or two.
Weight control matters more than usual in this breed, since Australian Terriers are known to have a higher than average tendency toward diabetes, and excess weight is a risk factor for it in dogs generally. Stick to regular meal times, count treats as part of the daily total, and choose a small, stable bowl that a busy terrier cannot tip over.
