Training an Akita: what works and what to expect

Akitas are smart but independent, and they tend to ask why before doing what you ask. Repetitive drills bore them quickly, so keep sessions short, reward generously with high-value food and stop while your dog is still interested. Harsh methods tend to provoke resistance or defensive behavior in this breed.

Early socialization with people is essential, and it has to continue through adolescence. Socialization with dogs helps too, but it will not guarantee an adult that enjoys other dogs, especially of the same sex. Good management matters just as much: a solid leash, a reliable leave-it and a calm settle cue are worth more than a repertoire of tricks.
