Biewer Terrier health: what owners should know
Conditions the Biewer Terrier is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.
Biewers are generally healthy, but toy breeds share some known issues. These include patellar luxation (a slipping kneecap), portosystemic shunt (an abnormal blood vessel around the liver), Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease affecting the hip, tracheal collapse, and dental disease. Responsible breeders check kneecaps and can discuss liver screening and other tests used in the breed.
Keep your dog lean, use a harness instead of a collar, and prevent falls from furniture. Brush teeth regularly. See a vet if your dog skips on a back leg, honks or coughs repeatedly, shows stunted growth or confusion after meals, or has bad breath and red gums.
