Boykin Spaniel grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Boykin Spaniel: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush once or twice a week with a slicker brush and comb, focusing on the feathering around the ears, chest, legs and belly, where burrs and mats collect after fieldwork. Many owners trim the feathering shorter for easier care, especially on working dogs. Shedding is moderate, with a mild increase in spring and autumn.
Ears are the main maintenance area. Check and clean them weekly, and dry them after every swim. Bathe every few months or when needed, trim hair between the paw pads, and keep nails short. Dogs that spend time in brush or tall grass should be checked for ticks and grass seeds after every outing, particularly between the toes and inside the ear flaps.
