Welsh Springer Spaniel grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Welsh Springer Spaniel: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Feathering is the high-maintenance part of this coat. Go over it two or three times a week with a slicker brush and a comb, focusing on the feathering on the ears, legs and belly, where burrs and mats collect. The coat is fairly weather-resistant and sheds dried mud well. Trim the hair on the feet and under the ears to keep them tidy and let air circulate.
A bath every six to eight weeks is plenty, plus one after a particularly muddy outing. Trim nails every three to four weeks. Check the ears weekly and after every swim: dry them well and look for redness, odor or discharge. Shedding is moderate all year, with a heavier spell in spring.
