Boykin Spaniel feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Boykin Spaniel.
Working season and off season call for different portions. A 15 kg (33 lb) Boykin with a moderate lifestyle typically eats around 200 to 260 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 2 to 2.5 cups, divided into two meals. Dogs hunting several days a week may need 30 to 50 percent more during the season, and a pet Boykin who gets less exercise will gain weight quickly if portions stay the same. Recheck body condition every few weeks when routines change.
Long, feathered ears dangle into food and water, leaving them wet and sticky, which is not ideal for a breed already prone to ear trouble. A bowl with a narrower opening and steeper sides keeps ears out, and a quick wipe after meals helps. Keep fresh water close by after exercise, especially in hot, humid climates like the one the breed comes from.
