Training a Boykin Spaniel: what works and what to expect

Boykins are responsive and quick to learn, which makes them a reasonable choice for first-time owners willing to put in training time. They respond best to positive reinforcement, especially retrieving games and food rewards, and harsh methods tend to shut them down quickly.

The retrieving instinct is strong, so teach a solid give or drop early, and practice swapping items for treats before your puppy starts guarding stolen socks. Common issues include jumping up in excitement, puppy mouthing, and chewing or barking when under-exercised. Many Boykins also excel in hunt tests, which give structure to their natural skills.
