Boykin puppies grow quickly in their first six months and typically reach adult height by 12 months, then fill out until about 15 to 18 months. They are active and curious from the start, and many show a strong urge to carry things by eight weeks, which is a useful foundation for later retrieving work.
Because hip dysplasia is relatively common in the breed, protect growing joints: keep puppies lean, avoid long runs on hard ground, and limit repeated leaping in and out of boats or trucks until your vet says growth plates have closed. Introduce water gradually, starting with shallow areas on warm days, so the puppy wades in by choice rather than being thrown in.
