Brittany health: what owners should know

The breed is generally healthy and long-lived for its size. Conditions seen in Brittanys include hip dysplasia, some inherited eye problems, epilepsy and hypothyroidism. Responsible breeders screen both parents' hips through a recognized scheme and have their eyes examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist. Ask to see the certificates rather than accepting a verbal assurance.

Active dogs also collect active-dog injuries: torn nails, cut pads, grass seeds in ears and between toes, and muscle strains. A few minutes of walking before hard running and a quick check of the feet afterward prevent a lot of trouble. Book a vet visit if your dog has a seizure, is still lame the day after an injury, or has an eye that looks cloudy, red or held half shut.
