Training a Brittany: what works and what to expect
How the Brittany learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.
Brittanys are eager, quick learners that love having a task. Calm, consistent training with food, play and praise brings out the best in them, while heavy corrections tend to produce a dog that avoids you. Several five-minute sessions spread across the day suit their attention span better than one long lesson.
The pointing instinct appears early, sometimes at 8 to 10 weeks, when a puppy freezes at a sparrow or a feather on a string. Owners who do not hunt can channel this into games of find and hold, or into scent sports. The usual challenges are impulse control around birds, jumping up in excitement and settling in the house. Teaching a relaxed down on a mat from puppyhood pays off for years.
