Tibetan Terrier health: what owners should know

Conditions the Tibetan Terrier is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.

The breed is predisposed to several eye conditions, including primary lens luxation and progressive retinal atrophy, as well as an inherited neurological disease known as NCL, hip dysplasia, loose kneecaps and an underactive thyroid. Reputable breeders use DNA tests for lens luxation, PRA and NCL, and screen hips and eyes before breeding.

Keeping the eyes clear of hair, maintaining a healthy weight and grooming regularly help catch problems early. Contact your vet promptly if one eye becomes suddenly red, cloudy or painful, if your dog struggles in dim light, or if you notice clumsiness, weight gain with lethargy or unusual behavior changes.
