Pharaoh Hound health: what owners should know

On the whole this is a healthy breed with fewer inherited problems than many pedigrees. Hip dysplasia, kneecap problems and some eye conditions turn up occasionally. Like sighthounds, Pharaoh Hounds carry very little body fat and can be sensitive to some anesthetics and chemicals, including certain insecticides, so remind your vet of the breed before any treatment.

Hip and eye screening of the parents is a reasonable request, and an honest breeder will talk openly about health in the line. Protect your hound from the cold and keep it lean and fit. Call a vet if your dog is lame for more than a couple of days, has cloudy or painful eyes, loses weight suddenly, or reacts unusually after any parasite treatment.
