Catahoula puppies grow quickly, reaching close to adult height at 10 to 12 months and filling out until 18 months or so. They are usually bold, busy and curious from the start, which makes early training and socializing unusually valuable. A puppy left to entertain itself will find its own projects, often involving furniture.
Protect young joints by saving long runs and repeated jumping until at least 12 to 14 months, and fill the gap with short training sessions, puzzle toys and supervised play. Merle puppies in particular should have a BAER hearing test, and good breeders never mate two merles together, since that pairing raises the risk of deafness and eye defects.
