Silky Terrier feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Silky Terrier.

Small stomach, big opinions. A 4.5 kg (10 lb) Silky typically needs about 60 to 90 g of a small-breed dry food a day, roughly two thirds to three quarters of a cup, split into two meals. Energy needs vary with activity, so weigh your dog every month or two and adjust portions rather than trusting the scoop.

Many Silkies are selective eaters and learn quickly that refusing a meal brings something tastier. Offer meals at set times, remove uneaten food after about 20 minutes, and resist adding extras. A shallow, wide bowl keeps the long facial hair out of food, and a quick wipe after meals prevents staining and matting around the mouth.
