Shar-Pei are clever, but they treat training as a negotiation. They respond best to calm, consistent handlers who keep sessions short and rewards clear. Repetition bores them quickly, so mix up exercises and stop while the dog is still interested.
Early socialization with people, children and other dogs is essential to soften the breed's natural guardedness. Aim for puppy classes, controlled introductions and a steady stream of friendly visitors between 8 and 16 weeks. Many Shar-Pei prefer life as the only dog or live best with one of the opposite sex. Teach calm acceptance of handling of the face, ears and feet, since those areas need checking often.
