How much exercise does a Basset Hound need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Basset Hound enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Around 45 to 60 minutes a day suits most adults, taken as two unhurried walks. A Basset walk is mostly sniffing, and that is the point: following scent is real mental work for a hound. Let the dog choose the pace for part of the route and you will come home to a tired, contented animal.
Keep a Basset on a lead or long line anywhere unfenced. Once the nose locks onto a trail, recall fades, and a dog that seems slow can cover a surprising distance. Scent games around the garden or a proper scentwork class suit the breed perfectly. Skip long runs, repeated jumping and ball chasing on hard ground, and watch for heavy panting in warm weather, since Bassets overheat sooner than their calm pace suggests.
