Chow puppies look like plush toys at 8 weeks, weighing around 4 to 5 kg (9 to 11 lb). They grow steadily, reaching most of their adult height by 9 to 12 months, but the head, chest and full coat keep developing until about 18 months to 2 years. The first adult coat often arrives in stages, and a puppy can look patchy and uneven during the change.
Keep weight lean and exercise moderate while joints develop, and handle your puppy's face, feet, ears and coat every single day. A Chow that learns to accept grooming at 10 weeks becomes an adult you can maintain at home; one that never did may need sedation for a full groom. Squinting, watery or rubbed eyes in a puppy are a reason to see a vet soon, because eyelid problems often show up during growth.
