Chow Chow health: what owners should know

Entropion, where the eyelids roll inward, heads the list of conditions Chows are known to be predisposed to, alongside hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism and heat intolerance. Some Chows also have narrowed airways or heavy folds around the eyes linked to their facial structure. Responsible breeders X-ray hips and elbows, test thyroid function and have eyes examined by a specialist, favoring dogs with open eyes and moderate features.

Brush right down to the skin so you spot lumps, redness or sore patches early. See a vet if your Chow squints, rubs its eyes or has constant tearing, because rolled eyelids can scratch the surface of the eye. Book a check as well for weight gain without extra food, a thinning coat or unusual sluggishness, and seek urgent help for any sign of heatstroke.
