Growth speed depends on the variety. Toys and miniatures usually reach adult size by 9 to 12 months, while standards may keep growing until 12 to 15 months and take a little longer to fill out through the chest. The adult coat develops gradually, and the full mane often appears only in the second year.
Early socialization matters more than most owners expect. Eskies that do not meet a wide range of people, sounds and situations before about 14 weeks can become suspicious, noisy adults. Puppy classes, calm visitors and short trips to busy places all help. In smaller Eskies, a young dog that starts limping on a hind leg should see a vet, because some hip and knee conditions show up during growth.
