Training a Chow Chow: what works and what to expect

How the Chow Chow learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Chows learn quickly but ask why before they comply. Repetitive drills and forceful handling usually produce flat refusal, while calm, short sessions with food rewards and predictable routines get far better results. Think of training as negotiating with a thoughtful adult rather than directing an eager helper.

Socialization is the priority. Between 8 and 16 weeks, give your puppy calm, pleasant experiences with many kinds of people, including children, men with beards, people in hats and visitors at the door. Keep it going through adolescence, since Chows can become more guarded around their first birthday. Recall is often unreliable, so keep your dog on lead in unfenced areas and use a long line for practice.
