Wheatens grow at a moderate pace, reaching adult height at around 10 to 12 months and filling out to adult weight by about 18 months. The most dramatic change is in the coat rather than the body. Puppies arrive dark, the adolescent coat can look fluffy and patchy, and the silky wheaten color may not settle until age two or later.
Use the growing months to make grooming normal. Five minutes a day of brushing, combing, touching feet and ears, and standing on a table builds a dog that accepts care calmly, while a puppy that learns to hate the brush often becomes a matted adult that has to be shaved. If a young Wheaten has persistent diarrhea, repeated vomiting, or drinks far more than usual, talk to your vet promptly.
