Training a Dalmatian: what works and what to expect

How the Dalmatian learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Dalmatians are bright and learn quickly, but they are sensitive and remember rough handling for a long time. Reward-based training with food, toys and play works best, with sessions kept short and cheerful. Socializing matters a great deal: meet plenty of calm people, dogs and places between 8 and 16 weeks, because a poorly socialized Dalmatian can become wary or defensive.

Dogs with hearing loss train well with hand signals, a vibrating collar and a flashlight cue for recall. It is also worth teaching every Dalmatian to be woken gently by touch, so a startle never turns into a snap. Common challenges are pulling on the lead, jumping up to greet, and selective hearing once running starts, so put early work into loose-lead walking and a strong recall.
