How much exercise does a Dalmatian need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Dalmatian enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Most adult Dalmatians need 90 minutes to 2 hours of activity every day. They were bred for endurance rather than sprinting, so steady trotting suits them: long walks, jogging, hiking, canicross, or, once fully grown and gradually conditioned, running beside a bicycle on a proper attachment. Mental work counts too, and agility, rally and trick training are all popular with the breed.
An under-exercised Dalmatian is hard to live with. Expect laps of the living room, chewing, attention barking and a dog that cannot settle in the evening. Overdoing it is also possible, so build distance slowly, adding no more than about 10 percent a week, and ease off if you see heavy panting, lagging behind or stiffness the next day, especially in warm weather.
