Dalmatian grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Dalmatian: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The coat looks low maintenance, and it is easy to brush, but it sheds constantly. The stiff little white hairs weave into carpets, car seats and dark clothing, and a lint roller becomes a household staple. Brush two or three times a week with a rubber curry mitt or a bristle brush, and daily during the heavier sheds of spring and autumn.
Baths are only needed every couple of months, since the coat tends to shed dirt once it dries. Some Dalmatians have sensitive, itchy skin, so choose a mild dog shampoo and rinse very thoroughly. Check ears weekly, trim nails every 3 to 4 weeks unless pavement running wears them down, and brush teeth several times a week.
