Training a Belgian Groenendael: what works and what to expect

How the Belgian Groenendael learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

This is a breed that learns from every repetition, good or bad. Sessions of 5 to 10 minutes, clear criteria and generous rewards produce outstanding results, and many Groenendaels are as motivated by a tug toy as by food. Because they are sensitive, harsh corrections can create avoidance or anxiety that takes months to repair. Mark and reward what you want, and interrupt mistakes calmly.

Common challenges include herding children and bikes, reacting to fast movement and barking at noises. Build impulse control from puppyhood with games such as waiting at doors and settling on a mat, and socialize widely with people, places and surfaces between 8 and 16 weeks. An adult Groenendael benefits from a regular class or sport, both for its own mind and for its owner's handling skills.
