Tervuren puppies grow steadily and are near full height by 10 to 12 months, but they keep filling out and maturing for up to two years. The coat changes a great deal along the way: puppies are often fluffy and lighter in color, and the long ruff and dark overlay develop through the second year. Mentally, many stay puppyish and easily distracted until 18 months or beyond.
Protect growing joints by avoiding long runs on hard surfaces, repeated jumping and endless ball throwing until at least 12 to 14 months. Short training sessions, varied walks on soft ground and puzzle toys build confidence without strain. Socializing between 8 and 16 weeks is essential, since an under-socialized Tervuren can turn fearful. Tell your vet about any limping, bunny-hopping or difficulty getting up.
