Rough Collie puppies grow steadily and reach most of their height by 10 to 12 months, but full coat, chest depth and a mature head take until age 2 or even 3 in males. Many go through a leggy, thin-coated stage between 6 and 12 months that worries new owners. It is normal, and the coat comes back.
Collie puppies can be sound sensitive and may pass through a fearful phase in adolescence, so socialization matters more in this breed than in most. Calm, positive exposure to traffic, visitors, vacuum cleaners and other dogs before 16 weeks does more for adult confidence than anything you do later. Keep stairs and jumping moderate until about a year. Litters should have their eyes checked by a specialist at around 6 to 7 weeks, and you should ask your vet about any limp or change in the appearance of the eyes.
