How much exercise does a Dutch Shepherd need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Dutch Shepherd enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Plan on 90 minutes to 2 hours of activity daily, with at least 30 minutes of that as mental work: tracking, obedience, nose work or learning new tricks. Walks alone rarely satisfy a Dutch Shepherd. They thrive in structured sports such as IGP, mondioring, French ring, agility, herding trials and canicross.
Too little work shows up as spinning, fence running, shadow chasing, nipping at heels or nonstop barking. Overdoing it is also possible with a dog that never says no, so build rest days into the week and teach an off switch: a settle on a mat, rewarded quietly. Check for sore feet, torn nails and stiff muscles after hard sessions.
