Large Munsterlander health: what owners should know

The breed is generally robust, but it is predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections and, less commonly, thyroid problems and inherited eye conditions. Responsible breeders X-ray hips and elbows, arrange eye examinations and, in Germany, test working ability before breeding. Ask to see results for both parents.

A slim waistline, dry ears after every swim and a quick hands-on check of feet and coat after each outing prevent a lot of trouble. See a vet for persistent head shaking or a smelly ear, lameness lasting more than a day, weight gain without a change in food, or a lump in the coat. Go straight to an emergency clinic if your dog tries repeatedly to vomit with nothing coming up, or its belly looks bloated and tight.
