Finnish Lapphund grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Finnish Lapphund: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush thoroughly once or twice a week with a pin brush and an undercoat rake, working through the thick hair behind the ears, on the britches and around the tail. Once or twice a year the dog blows its undercoat, dropping enough fluff over about three weeks to fill several bags. During that time, daily raking and a warm bath followed by a high-velocity dryer speed things up considerably.
Do not shave a Lapphund to keep it cool in summer; the double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and can grow back patchy. Trim fur between the paw pads to prevent snowballs and slipping on floors, and cut nails every three to four weeks. Otherwise the coat is naturally dirt-resistant, and bathing a few times a year is enough.
