Finnish Lapphund feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Finnish Lapphund.
A 20 kg (44 lb) adult Lapphund typically eats about 230 to 300 g of dry food a day, roughly 2.5 to 3 cups, split into two meals. Lappies are good eaters and tend to put on weight easily, particularly after neutering, and the dense coat hides a spreading waistline very effectively. Run your hands down the ribs weekly: you should feel them under a thin layer of padding without pressing.
Activity changes with the seasons for many Lapphunds, who may be energetic in winter and lethargic on warm summer days. Adjust portions accordingly, reducing by around 10 percent in lazy months if the ribs start to disappear. A standard floor-level bowl suits this medium-sized breed; fresh, cool water matters more, especially in summer.
