Training an Irish Water Spaniel: what works and what to expect

IWS are intelligent and keen to learn, but they have a stubborn streak and bore quickly with repetition. Short, varied sessions with food, toys and retrieves as rewards work best. They respond poorly to harsh methods and may become wary or refuse to work.

Early socialization is important because of their natural reserve with strangers. Teach impulse control, loose-lead walking and a reliable recall, especially near water, where a flock of ducks can override every cue you have taught. Formal gundog training satisfies their instincts and gives a clear outlet for their brains.
