German Shorthaired Pointer grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the German Shorthaired Pointer: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Short hair does not mean no hair: a Shorthair sheds more than most people expect, and the stiff little hairs weave into fabric. A rubber curry mitt once or twice a week lifts the loose coat, and in spring and autumn you may want it every other day. A bath every couple of months is usually enough, unless your dog has rolled in something foul, which is common.
Check the drop ears weekly, especially after swimming, and dry them well. Field dogs pick up grass seeds between the toes and inside ears, so run your hands over the feet after every outing in long grass. Nails wear down on some surfaces, but most need trimming every three to four weeks.
