German Spitz grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the German Spitz: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The stand-off coat needs brushing two or three times a week. Work in layers: part the hair and brush outward from the skin with a pin brush or slicker, then check with a comb, especially behind the ears, under the front legs and in the thick trousers on the back legs. Line brushing like this reaches the undercoat, which is where tangles hide.
Most shed heavily once or twice a year, and daily brushing for a couple of weeks during that time keeps the house bearable. Avoid shaving the coat, which can regrow slowly or unevenly and strips away its insulation. Bathe every six to eight weeks and dry fully to the skin. Brush teeth several times a week and trim nails every three to four weeks.
